Many people have remarked on the low crime rates in Singapore. Sociologist have attempted to attribute it to cultural differences. It’s been attributed to everything from diet to video games. As usual, I have my own ideas. Singapore uses a method of punishment called “caning”. For more serious crimes, you can be sentenced to caning and jail time.
What is caning you ask? Well, a professional with a rattan cane takes swats at your bare bottom. Now, I know that you anti-spanking advocates will hate this, but it seems that the whole thing is so humiliating that very few criminals in Singapore re-offend. This is in stark contrast to the US criminal/judicial system where about 80% of the people are repeat offenders. Maybe spanking that kid isn’t so bad after all? It seems to work on adults….
