McJob – from Wikipedia – “McJob is slang for a low-paying, low-prestige job that requires few skills and offers
very little chance of intracompany advancement.”
McJob – from Urbandictionary.com – “fast food happy meal bitch work“, “a shitty unskilled job. The name refers to the business
of McDonald’s, and usually is intended to mean shitty unskilled job at a
fast food restaurant“.
Alternatively, also from Urbandictionary.com – “When you masturbate with any McDonald’s food item.“
Most people know that McJob means a crappy, soul-sucking, low-paying, and some how demeaning job that has basically zero chance of advancement. It is, in effect, a place holder for a real job – providing a usually insufficient paycheck and no satisfaction.
Now, McDonald’s is NOT lovin’ it, as their slogan goes. They’ve actively petitioned to have the definition changed because they don’t like how the word is being used. Dictionaries record *usage* not what some corporation wants.
Here’s how McDonald’s is wanting it rephrased – “a job that is stimulating, rewarding and offers genuine opportunities for career progression and skills that last a lifetime.”
This is pretty much a complete opposite of what the reality is for 99% of their employees. Throwing fries in the fryer and flipping patties isn’t anything that most people would consider stimulating or rewarding for more than about the first five minutes. When the biggest advancement you can hope for is to move up from “clean up” to “cashier”, I don’t think that really qualifies as “career progression”. I’m sure that learning to tend grease burns is a skill is that lasts a life time. I’m not really sure what else you can take away from the experience other than learning to ask “Do you want fries with that?” in a non-sarcastic tone of voice.
